    my adhd

This is the main reason why its hard for me to fit in the typical structure of a classroom or a corporate setting. I took a series of exams at the psychological center in my senior year of college. I was wondering why I was so unmotivated in some aspects of school. I also had a problem concentrating and reading, still have those problems. What the results showed that I was a borderline genius suffering from ADHD along with a visual scanning disability that made it hard for me to read.

    Here are the symptoms...

    1. A sense of underachievement, of not meeting one's goals (regardless of how much one has actually accomplished).
    2. Difficulty getting organized.
    3. Chronic procrastination or trouble getting started.
    4. Many projects going simultaneously; trouble with follow through.
    5. A tendency to say what comes to mind without necessarily considering the timing or appropriateness of the remark.
    6. A frequent search for high stimulation.
    7. An intolerance of boredom.
    8. Easy distractibility; trouble focusing attention, tendency to tune out or drift away in the middle of a page or conversation, often coupled with an inability to focus at times.
    9. Trouble in going through established channels and following "proper" procedure.
    10. Impatient; low tolerance of frustration.
    11. Impulsive, either verbally or in action, as an impulsive spending of money.
    12. Changing plans, enacting new schemes or career plans and the like; hot-tempered
    13. Physical or cognitive restlessness.
    14. A tendency toward addictive behavior.
    15. Chronic problems with self-esteem.
    16. Inaccurate self-observation.

Yeah I'm pretty much the poster boy.

ADHD Strategies for School & Work

Diffused attention during the learning process greatly decreases the amount of information that can be transferred from short-term memory to long-term. When questioning an ADHD student about the material just presented during a lesson, typically he’ll recall bits and pieces of the material presented, but seldom a holistic perspective. Other areas of life are affected including everything from personal interactions to work or school.
    School

Diffused attention also makes reading a challenge as the student must read a passage two to four times before he can gain fundamental meaning from the text. Academic work becomes tiring and tedious. Children often claim homework is ‘boring’ after failing to be successful at simple assignments they are highly capable of accomplishing in short order if their attention were not diffused. Equating boredom with academic work is usually the result of lack of success and an assignment that is not highly stimulating.
    Social Interactions

Socially, diffused attention causes an inability to perceive social cues. A look of disapproval, a simple shake of the head meaning NO, and other social cues are overlooked. For adults, this can cause conflict between workers or embarrassing situations at social gatherings. For a child, peers tend to shy away from kids who cannot recognize social cues. ADHD kids are labeled as nuisances and are often excluded from parties, etc. ADHD kids also discern themselves from their peer which results in reduced self-esteem.
    Adults

Typical symptoms of ADHD such as hyperactivity, poor organizational skills, distractibility, impulsivity, etc., often are challenges for the adult in the workplace. A recent article in WebMD.com reports that Joseph Biederman, MD, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, has surveyed ADHD adults and found that the incomes of households with an ADHD member are substantially lower than households without an ADHD member. Biederman calculates that households with an ADHD member have incomes that are $10,791 lower for high school graduates and $4,334 lower for college graduates. This extrapolates to an annual revenue loss of close to $77 billion in the US.

Biederman reports that an adult with ADHD has greater difficulty keeping a job due to lack of organizational and social skills. In fact, he thinks the disorder may actually make it more difficult to get an appropriate education to obtain a job that offers a higher pay scale. Lost days at work due to ADHD also provide a negative financial impact. "About 50% of the people with ADHD who had jobs in the survey said they lost work directly related to their ADHD symptoms," says Biederman. "The symptoms of ADHD are very difficult for employers to deal with."

However, there are strategies that can be employed to maximize function, skill, and satisfaction in the workplace.
    Know your strengths and weaknesses

It is important to realize that many ADHD adults have successful careers. Edison, Mozart, and even Einstein may have had AD/HD. Success seems to be linked to employing good coping strategies once you’ve discovered your strengths and know your weaknesses. Once you become aware of your specific set of challenges, it will become easier for you to plan a strategy. Therefore, consider your unique characteristics as you design your strategies. Below is a checklist describing many of the symptoms typically associated with ADHD. Strategies for coping are listed below each symptom.

Distractibility – people walking by your desk, or talking near you, distract you from your work

    * Try to place yourself in the least distracting environment. This may be a private office or cubicle with little foot travel by other office workers. You may retreat to a conference room if possible.
    * Maintain a memo pad to keep ideas and assignments from slipping away if you become distracted. Use the memo pad to jot down notes when you receive a phone call.
    * Come in early or do your work when others are not in the office.
    * Don’t multi-task. Set a goal to finish your current task before starting another.
    * Background noise, sometimes known as "white noise" can be effective. Special white noise CDs, audio tapes, or earphones are available for this purpose. Simple classical or new age music may also help.

Poor Memory - you can’t recall dates, names, or appointments.

    * First and foremost, buy a day planner and use it religiously to keep track of your schedule and upcoming tasks.
    * Many freeware and commercial computer programs are available that automate scheduling and task reminders.
    * Make use of pocket recorders. Current recorders no longer need audio tapes as they record on microchips. These are effective for personal reminders or note taking at meetings.
    * Write checklists and set reasonable goals for projects.

Poor Organization - you can’t seem to finish projects on time or you fail to keep good records.

    * If possible, find a job that does not require long-term task management.
    * Set goals for your current task by breaking it into a series of manageable tasks. Mark the deadline for each mini-task with a timer. Computer programs are available for this or you may use a simple kitchen timer.
    * Reward yourself when you reach a goal.
    * Use an automated computer scheduler to set meeting times. These usually come with an alarm. Set it alert you five to ten minutes before each meeting.
    * Allow adequate time between meetings or projects to you do not overload or overbook your schedule.
    * Partner with a co-worker who has good organizational skills. This person may act as your coach. The coach will help set goals and reward you as you achieve your goals.

Impulsivity - you respond, at times, without thinking of consequences, sometimes your respond with outbursts

    * Have a trusted co-worker provide constructive feedback about your interactions with other staff. This co-worker may also act as a personal coach to role-play appropriate responses to common office dynamics.
    * From this feedback, develop strategies to be used when you become frustrated.
    * Yoga and some martial arts classes may prove effective in teaching relaxation and concentration skills. A meditation class may be effective, too.

Procrastination - you put things off until the last minute sometimes frustrating or angering colleagues

    * Set goals for your current task by breaking it into a series of manageable tasks. Mark the deadline for each mini-task with a timer. Computer programs are available for this or you may use a simple kitchen timer. Reward yourself when you reach a goal.
    * Use an automated computer scheduler to set meeting times. These usually come with an alarm.
    * Partner with a co-worker who has good organizational skills. This person may act as your coach. The coach will help set project goals and reward you as you achieve your goals.

Hyperactivity - you find it very difficult to sit still during meetings or at your desk o Maximize your personal time like breaks, lunch, etc. to exercise and burn off some energy. This can include walking around the block or trips up and down the stairwell.

    * Break up your day to include trips to the mailroom, photocopier, fax, and restroom. o Bring a notepad to meetings and take copious notes.
    * A rubber band or paperclip in your free hand can provide stimulation while you take notes.

Daydreaming - when you find something boring you block out the stimuli and think of something more fun.

    * Remember, if you have a job you truly enjoy, you’ll find you’ll daydream less. o A job with challenging responsibilities will provide less opportunity for daydreaming than a job shuffling papers.
    * Set goals for your current task by breaking it into a series of manageable tasks. Mark the deadline for each mini-task with a timer. Computer programs are available for this or you may use a simple kitchen timer.
    * Reward yourself when you reach a goal.

Avoiding details - details like paperwork bore you and you find them virtually impossible to finish o Rule number one; if you can get someone else to do it properly (like an office assistant), let them handle paperwork.

    * Make filing more fun by color coding folders and using catchy labels. o Personalize your filing (sensibly) by using fun labels and folders - possibly color coded.
    * For paperwork that requires immediate attention have your filing system close at hand, perhaps directly on your desk

Poor social skills - your interactions with your colleagues are marked by your interruptions, blunt comments, or poor listening skills.

    * Have a trusted co-worker provide constructive feedback about your interactions with other staff. This co-worker may also act as a personal coach to role-play appropriate responses to common office dynamics.
    * Pay particular attention to social cues and work on them with a personal coach to develop awareness and appropriate response.
    * From this feedback, develop strategies to be used when you become frustrated.
    * Learn to pick up on social cues more readily. Some adults with ADHD have a hard time picking up nonverbal cues that they are angering a co-worker or supervisor.

    new chapter

The previous chapter in my life is now closed. I had to close it, that was the problem. I Had the power to and I never did, because my idealization and what I thought was fate wouldn't let me. I let my insecurities take over me. I mean listen to what I used to say; "the garbage man who wins the lotto does not throw out the ticket." To give some background this is when my ex thought I would leave her or break her heart. And in her insecurity I put myself down. Its a sweet thing and nice memory to cherish but it has a negative undertone on how I see myself in comparison to her and that's not good.

This thing dragged out for over a year and I know the truth about how things went down , believe me so I really should have had taken control when I had the chance. Damn, how silly was I. Now knowing who she is and who I am and how the two don't tie together is like getting hit by Mike Tyson when he could still hurt people. After being stunned you see the world a little differently. I can't live in comparison to her. I can't live my life by what she wanted me to be or who I thought I should be. Because all the changes I made for her I did for thw wrong reasons and I should have been doing them for myself directly even though they ahd a positive impact. People aren't supposed to change for someone else, they're supposed to grow.

Those intimate moments, that closeness will be there forever. But the exciting possibilities that I have opened myself up to for the chance to create new moments is why we don't die from these things...

    why ask?

Why do people ask if there's anything they can do, when they're nothing to do. I don't know if people want to know whats going on more than if they can really help. But it irks me beyond normalcy because it has nothing to do with them!

Here's the part that jumps out, I'm only going to ask somebody if I know somethings wrong... If everything is fantastic, would I be asking? Only if you really care otherwise, no.

    the cowboy mentality

Try googling it and see what you find, not exactly what it means to me. But it goes back to the old Wild West, thinking about legendary characters like Jesse James and such. For my purposesI have to explain what I see as the cowboy mentality and how it relates to how I see myself now and then. I've always said after Dr. Kiesner once told me you're a cowboy.

What he meant in terms of business is that a cowboy pushes the envelope. He doesn't care what the rules are because he lives on his own morality whether that is supposed to be good, all things being equal. Cowboys aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. Cowboys lead from the front. People follow them because they are genuine, they're not wasting time, and they're following a passion. They're confident - borderline cocky. The cowboy is nonchalant under duress and is known for being clutch. People feel mysteriously safe around him. They can be wreckless and short-sided but they're not concerned with the collateral damage as much as the outcome. They got a chip on their shoulder believing that the world is against them, but refusing to lose anyways. Cowboys take what they want.

This whole mentality has defined me ever since it was introduced. It spoke to me in such a deep sense that I even acted this way just because thats what a cowboy would do. Ok, yes I tend to over think things and I apply principles to things that maybe don't belong just to make sense. I only say this when they just can't be explained not because I don't think I'm wrong as much as others are.

So who I am right now? So much has changed... I've garnered a whole new perspective on doing things the right way and leading from the front but watching those in the back so they don't get lost. My confidence overall is not the same. The long-term makes me rethink decisions. I can't find the passion.

Its pretty real.... When you realize that you're self-value was appraised on the way you and your parents handled a situation when you were 7 years old, that is what has dominated your life. I'll leave it at that for now...

    admitting

Sometimes you have to admit things outloud to really see where your problems are. I'm almost there, but I need to consult a professional to have assurance. But I do know one thing for sure, I know the moment in my life where I started feeling like I wasn't good enough and what my reaction to that was. And what the cherry on top of that sundae is that its been the reason for most of my troubles.

Great to know but what do with it, eh.

    rock bottom

I think yesterday must have been the absolute lowest I could go. If I'm ever in that kind of state again that I really, really need to reevaluate everything I'm doing. Anyways, I'm not sure how much I believe in rituals and all this kind of stuff but the priest at the temple said my stars in a cluster and there's one thing I can do and suddenly a huge positive change will happen my life. Hey, its cheaper than a shrink, if it works.

We will see how this thing goes but it really comes from a positive mindset. Refusing to lose and brushing off the all the bad shit and just keep walking.

Lately, I've been seeing what people do to make themselves happy. Its usually what they do in their spare time. Its really a fascinating to look at, overall I don't know how many of those things actually make people happy. Whatever floats boats. I use my freetime to keep myself from going crazy, and what does that tell me about what I'm doing with my regular time? That's where the change needs to come from.

    lets get real...

This blog has been full of negativity. This has been mostly about my emotional baggage. My ex-girlfriend, my insecurities and how my life sucks. There's nothing positive that someone could say to change my mindset, only me. So its time to temporarily shut this blog down. Because in real talk, I was trying to get a message across to someone for a very long time. Everything has changed now.

Its time for me to grow up, stop living in the past and stop wasting me time gripping to a sliver of hope. And I am only going to write for myself. That means that I have to spend some time evaluating my innerself and why I've been so blind. No time for more thinking, more action.

    if i could be anywhere...

I would love to have amnesia and lost in a tropical paradise. Starting over with nothing, needing nothing and not knowing what I've missing. Building a whole new set of everything from ground zero. I wonder where I would end up. If that was a realistic option I might really consider it. Its time to do the next best thing and escape reality.

    forget all the negatives

Today is my best friend's birthday, Feb. 11th. She's the only one thats reached out to keep me up consistently outside of family. And she's at a huge crossroads in her life in many aspects and even though its hard for me to be playful and tough to crack a smile, I'm going to eat it, and save the freakin' day... Not because I can, because even if I can't, I have to - no excuses...

I'm going to pick her up. If you know her drop a line...

I haven't bought a gift yet and I'm freaking out a little. Not that she would even care or mind, she already told me she just wants me to be there. Well, I need something to let her know this is the best year of her life.....

Unfortunately I have to slave, errr work tomorrow and I'm pretty much screwed on a gift for tomorrow. She's been listening to me bitch and moan for so long that I haven't paid attention to her and it kills me. And I'm not getting her another gift certificate, again...

    paradise

I wish I could find a place to get away from my everything. Where my head was clear of all the stress and thoughts. A place where I could be alone, and that would be more than ok...

Everyone's got their own problems and the only way I feel a little bit better is when I'm helping others deal with theirs. I can't think of what this place would look like or where it would be, but I feel trapped in this hell and it doesn't look like its going to let me out.

    its pretty amazing

Somehow I get in the car, I turn on the TV, I here songs from cars driving by and it only stands out when it connected to me at the moment. That's part of those little things of fate that I see. Either I'm psycho or my mind controls my environment or the universe is giving me hints. Only 3 options. Well anyways, I'm on my home from work minutes from a routine convo, relatively speaking. Then I hear this.

BTW, I love Green Day, seen them live 3 times and even though they do rock, I don't care to see them live again. But you have to love them.

    She

    She
    She screams in silence.
A sulley roit penetrating through her mind.
Waiting for a sign to smash the silence with the brick of self control.

Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed.
I'm taking heed in just for you.

    She
She's figured out all her doubts were someone else's point of view.
Waking up this time to smash the silence with the brick of self control.

Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed.
I'm taking heed in just for you.

Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you?
Are you feeling like a social tool without a use?
Scream at me until my ears bleed.
I'm taking heed in just for you.

    my bff

"Did you get struck by lightning today??" (in reference my string of bad luck)

Haha, when it rains it floods.

    who to vote for?

This is a real tough decision. How to decide between previous success, some say the real president during a nice period of prosperity (Hillary). Or there's the man who I saw change Arizona, a man of character, integrity and unfortunately a member of the GOP McCain. Then there's my boy Barack, young, energetic, and lacking experience, or a real track record.

I haven't made a choice, and this is only the primaries anyway so I guess I'll just write in my vote, McLovin.

    The defiant Giants

I never posted my superbowl predictions but I saw it going either one way or the other... Pats 31-13 or Giants 20-17. Why would I give 2 predictions? Well because if the storybook was written the way its supposed to go then the Pats would have blown them out shown they were a team of destiny and a true dynasty.

But how many things actually goo to plan? Especially with the variable being the other party. The Giants played on a championship level and they made the plays that all the other teams could not make this season. I wish I would have some bets on this game. You have to really believe in yourself to exceed all your potential. Who would have ever thought that the game would have come down to Eli Manning winning the game and the Patriots not making the big plays?? Perhaps it has to do with how the Patriots won most of their games, with other teams making mistakes and you executing like a clock. Well when the other teams make plays and is executing in their own style now you have to search for some experience to draw on and maybe they Pats thought they deserved to and they were going to win not considering what the Giants had in mind.

Either way, the Giants will NOT repeat next year. Im going to say San Diego super Chargers will.
